A renowned tech firm faced an issue with their Android application recently, which was precisely ten years old and crafted in plain java/Android Studio. They found themselves at odds when their foundational app was removed from the Google PlayStore for devices that operated on API level 31 or higher, although their app was only compatible up to the API level 26. This removal greatly impacted the visibility and accessibility of their app, impeding business continuity and user experience. Recognizing the urgent need to resolve this issue, they sought a quick and efficient solution that would enhance their app up to API Level 33.
One of the major challenges was the disparity in how long the developers estimated it would take to upgrade the app. Some suggested it could be done within a day, while others advised a timeline of up to two months, causing uncertainty and lack of direction for the game plan ahead.
Solution
Given the urgency of the problem and the need for swift delivery, our team was tasked with quickly familiarizing themselves with the old codebase and outlining the most efficient path to reach API Level 33. It required detailed understanding and analysis of the underlying application composition, Developer API, upgrade effort involved, and knowledge of advanced Android Studio. Despite only having the source code and limited technical help from the client, our team overcame herculean tasks to ensure seamless and swift resolution.
The Process
